The Great Flood of 1874:

A boulder with a plaque deep in a forest in the hills above Williamsburg. Outcrops of what might be ledge, but on closer examination turn out to be an old wall. The ruins of the Williamsburg Reservoir Dam are a reminder of how greed for water power spawned a disaster in our valley.

She had her sunglasses on and sat stiffly there in the booth, not saying a word. An actress trying to dodge the reporters. We had our coffees and our glazed donuts and we had a good view of the clock in front of the bank across the street. It was one am. I let some time go by.

“I never told you why I got hysterical on you earlier.” I said.

She didn’t say anything, but she got out a pack of cigarettes, lit one, and took my hand in a casual kind of way. She squeezed it, a kind of friendly go right ahead and talk squeeze.
